Use your own Google key.

Plug a Google AI Studio key into VeoStudio and everything Google makes — video, images, frames and music — runs on your account at Google's prices. No tokens are spent here, and nothing caps how much you make but Google. The 8-second Quality shot that costs 80 tokens is $3.20 of Google billing instead.

01

What it is

Two accounts, one studio

Normally VeoStudio calls Google on your behalf and bills you in tokens. Bring your own key and that flips: the studio sends the same job to Google using your credentials, Google bills your card directly at its list price, and your token balance is never touched.

Nothing else about the studio changes. The director, the templates, the character library, the frames, the timeline and the stitch are all still there, still included in Pro at $25 a month. The key only decides who pays Google for the render.

It is worth it when you generate a lot. The token rate is a managed price with the platform, the queue and the retries inside it; Google's rate is raw compute. The heavier the month, the wider that gap gets — and there is no ceiling on your key, so a Saturday of Quality shots is a Google invoice rather than a top-up.

Everything Google makes is covered: Veo 3.1 video on all three tiers, Nano Banana images, first and last frames, and Lyria music. A few things still use tokens.

02

The maths

Tokens vs Google direct

Tokens are priced at the Pro rate — $25 for 300 tokens, so $0.083 each. Google's column is Google's own published list price for the same model, billed to your project.

One of theseOn tokensOn your keyDifference
Draft shot · 8s$0.05 a second12 tokens$1.00$0.402.5× cheaper

Nano Banana Pro imageper image, up to 2K4 tokens$0.333$0.1342.5× cheaper
Lyria music · 30s clipper clip10 tokens$0.833$0.0420.8× cheaper

Two honest footnotes. Tokens get cheaper in bulk — the production pack works out at $0.053 a token, which narrows every row above without closing it. And Google's prices are Google's to change: these were its published rates in August 2026, and your invoice comes from them, not from me.

Nano Banana 2 Lite images run on your key too — Google prices that model separately, so check its rate card for the current figure. The full token side is on the pricing page.

Set it up

Three steps · about 5 minutes

  1. 01

    Get a key from Google

Open Google AI Studio, click Create API key, and pick a Google Cloud project that has billing switched on. The free tier will not generate video — Veo needs a billed project.

    aistudio.google.com/apikey

  2. 02

    Paste it into VeoStudio

In the studio, open the account menu, choose API key, and paste the whole key into the field. It is sent once and never shown again.

    Account → API key

  3. 03

    Validate and save

VeoStudio checks the key with Google before storing it. Once it saves, the row shows the last four characters and reads Active — every Google job from then on runs on your account.

    Validate & save

Not on Pro yet? The key field is part of the Pro plan — $25 a month, which also covers Quality video, Nano Banana Pro images and 300 tokens. See what Pro includes.

What still uses tokens

Your key is a Google key

The other video engines

Runway, Kling, MiniMax and Sora are not Google models, so your Google key cannot pay for them. Send a scene to one of those and it is billed in tokens exactly as before.

Runway · Kling · MiniMax · Sora

Character voices

Text-to-speech still runs on the studio account and is billed in tokens, whether or not your key is active.

Everything that was already free

AI script writing, the director chat, templates, the character library, the timeline and stitching are what the Pro subscription buys. They cost nothing either way.

05 · Limits

Google's key API is a little narrower.

Your key talks to a different Google endpoint than the studio's own account does, and that endpoint accepts fewer shapes of shot. Where a shot will not run, VeoStudio says so before it submits anything — it never quietly drops a setting you asked for, and it never bills you for a render that ignored it.

Shot length
4, 6 or 8 seconds — nothing in between.
Aspect ratio
16:9 and 9:16. Square is not available on your own key.
1080p
Needs an 8-second shot. On a 4 or 6 second shot, film at 720p instead.
Last-frame continuity
Needs a shot of exactly 8 seconds.
Reference images
Up to 3 on Fast and Quality. Google refuses them on Draft.
Audio
Always on. Veo renders dialogue and effects into every clip and it cannot be switched off.

Any of those is a reason to switch the key off for one shot rather than a reason not to use it. Tokens support all of them.

06

How the key is held

Encrypted · yours to revoke

The key is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before it is written down, tied to your account so a copy of the record is useless anywhere else, and decrypted only inside the request that submits your job to Google.

It is never sent back to the browser. Once saved, the only thing the studio will ever show you again is the last four characters, which is enough to recognise which key is loaded and nothing more.

Remove deletes it. You can also revoke it at Google's end at any moment, from the same AI Studio page you created it on — the next job simply refuses instead of running, and switching the key off puts you straight back on tokens.

What Google can see is what Google always sees about its own customers: your prompts and the jobs you submit, billed to your project under your own Google terms.

When it goes wrong

5 answers

Google rejected this key

Google turned the key down, so it is marked invalid and the next job runs on your tokens instead — nothing is generated on a key Google will not accept. Usually the key was revoked, pasted short, or belongs to a project with billing switched off. Create a fresh key in Google AI Studio and paste it over the old one.

A shot refuses to generate on my key

VeoStudio checks the shot against what your key can actually do before it submits anything, and tells you which setting is the problem — a length, a ratio, a resolution or a reference image. Change that setting, or switch the key off for that shot and run it on tokens.

Google says I have hit a quota

That is a limit on your own Google project, not on VeoStudio. Raise the quota in Google Cloud, or switch your key off and finish the job on tokens — your balance is untouched while the key is active.

I want to go back to tokens

Open Account → API key and choose "Use tokens instead". The key stays saved but dormant, and generation goes back to your token balance immediately. Remove deletes it outright.

What happens to my tokens while the key is on?

Nothing. Google jobs spend none of them, so the balance sits exactly where you left it, and the monthly Pro allowance still lands. Tokens never expire.

Still stuck

Ask me directly.

I built the key support myself and I answer the support mail. If a key will not validate, or a shot refuses on your account and you cannot see why, send me the scene and I will look.
